| In
1999, Emmanuel Commenges and Guillaume Dupuy made music with a
didgeridoo and a saxophone. Nostoc was born from that encounter, and
over time the band was fleshed out with the addition of the khene,
voices, the bass clarinet, and percussion instruments. Nostoc started
writing and improvising music for the theatre and dance shows, notably
with Maki Watanabe, a Japanese butoh dancer.
Little
by little, Nostoc’s musical identity became established. Their
influences are varied (Hadouk Trio, Gnawa music, Michel Portal,
Balinese gamelan, music of the Sufis and Aboriginal chants) and the
three musicians found the balance necessary for creating an atypical
project.
The communication between instruments and the subtle
balance between composition and improvisation remain the pillars of
their research. In this way, the audience is led to sharing a unique
moment, where the music explores states of mellowness, dance, trance
and meditation...
